Dystonia's Impact
Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes the muscles to contract and spasm involuntarily. The neurological mechanism that makes muscles relax when they are not in use does not function properly. Opposing muscles often contract simultaneously as if they are "competing" for control of a body part. The involuntary muscle contractions force the body into repetitive and often twisting movements as well as awkward, irregular postures. There are approximately 13 forms of dystonia, and dozens of diseases and conditions include dystonia as a major symptom.
Dystonia often impacts every aspect of a person's life, and learning to live with dystonia can be a profound adjustment. Many people with dystonia describe the process of diagnosis and everyday coping as riding a rollercoaster with dramatic ups and downs. Despite the challenges of living with the disorder, members of the dystonia community are resilient, inspiring people.
Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) prides itself on a long history of supporting dystonia research. Always the primary goal of the DMRF, research has led to a better understanding of dystonia as well as to breakthroughs ingenetics and therapeutics.
